What’s inside this episode:

  • A review of Treasures of Mystery Island, by Alawar Entertainment. This hidden object game had an opportunity to bring a new feature to the hidden object genre. But the substandard gameplay balance, cheesy storyline, and off-balance graphics inhibit its potential.
    Treasures of Mystery Island
  • Also, a review of Disco Tech, published by D7 Studios. This standard marble puzzle roller is wrapped within a nicely integrated disco theme. But the badly balanced puzzles and problematic obstacles really get in the way of a good time.

  • Plus, a review of Supermarket Mania 2, published by G5 Entertainment. Supermarket Mania 2 brings back the fun of the original and adds a whole lot more to manage. Even with the somewhat easy gameplay balance, this time management game was still a race to the finish line.

UPDATE: I heard back from G5 regarding why no Stand O’Food 2 for the Mac was released…that version was just not good enough to port to the Mac! We really DID luck out!.

Stand O'Food 3G5 Entertainment has announced that Stand O’Food 3, sequel to their burger-serving game, will be available for download on the Mac App Store starting June 2 for $6.99. Head to Tinseltown with Ronnie the Chef as he extends his burger chain operations and disrupts the evil plans of Mr. Torg.

Stand O’Food 3 includes over 75 levels and 12 special levels to unlock over 33 achievements to obtain expert status. During the game, you open restaurants around Tinseltown, serving fast and healthy food including fresh-made burgers, pies, lasagnas, French fries, coffee, ice cream and soda. Hmm, somebody has an interesting definition of “healthy food”.

Interestingly enough, G5 skipped Stand O’Food 2 for the Mac, going straight for number three…we’ve lucked out with the most recent version! Also, if the word “Tinseltown” sounds familiar, it’s because that’s where Nikki from Supermarket Mania 2 shows up to open her supermarket stores in. And guess who she meets there? Romance in the air…?

Anyway, the gameplay of the original Stand O’Food comes with all new graphics, music, customers, products, devices and special levels, as well as new game mechanics, ingredients and sauces to research new recipes, and feeding customers in 25 cafes around the city.

First up is yesterday’s release of Supermarket Mania 2. The sequel to the original game of time managing a grocery store, main character Nikki arrives in Tinseltown with friends to help Uncle Ross defend his supermarket chain from the evils of Mr. Torg. There are many new features in the game, including ten new game mechanics to deal with (like delivering goods in the neighborhood). The game is free to start, but costs to unlock the full set of levels: $4.99 for the iPhone and $6.99 for the iPad.

From supermarket to chainsaw fighter of the dead, now’s your time to fight with Ash in Army of Darkness Defense. Backflip Studios partnered with MGM Studios to bring this castle defense game to the iOS. Featuring original music and sounds, quotes from the movie, and 50 levels, the game is sure to grab the attention of Evil Dead fans all around. And, yes, that IS Bruce Campbell’s voice in there! The game costs $0.99, but includes a number of in-app purchases as well.

Lastly, Ankama is getting into the iOS game finally. They’ve released DOFUS: Battles today, which they describe as a “blend of Tower Defence, real-time strategy and RPG” within the DOFUS universe. You must stop Jeff Stobbs and the demon Naz T Peasawerk (what a name!) from taking over the World of Twelve by defeating hordes of monsters. To do that, you control a dragon and one disciple from each of the twelve worlds, each with its own unique spell. Characters evolve and equipment upgrades as the game unfolds. You can get the game for the iPhone/iPod Touch for $2.99, iPad for $5.99. There are also lite versions of both.

Alawar has released an iPad version of their Treasures of Mystery Island iPhone game. Inspired by the television series Lost, this hidden object game has you collecting pieces of tools and other items that you will be using throughout the game. With the non-linear plot, the game description reminds me of Snark Busters. You can get the game for $4.99, and do a trial run with a lite version.

G5 Entertainment has also released a treasure seeking game as well, with Treasure Seekers 2. Available for both iPhone and iPad, players will help Nelly find her brother Tom as she searches through six different locations. The trailer showed an interesting gameplay technique…finding hidden objects based not on a list, but on what you think that the target is looking for. Not sure how that will play out in the game itself, but it looks intriguing. The game is $4.99 for the iPhone version, $6.99 for the iPad version.

Unfortunately, you won’t see it up on the App Store at the moment…there seems to be some kind of download problem that Feral is in the process of working out with Apple. We should see Borderlands: GoTY edition up there soon as well.

Lastly, PlayFirst made a dive into the Mac App Store with their popular dash series. Diner Dash 5: Boom! and Hotel Dash: Suite Success are the first two titles to appear in the App Store, starting at a price of $6.99.
