Hey…Where’s iGame Radio??

July 25th, 2008 by omaha

If you read this blog, you’ve probably been thinking that for a while now. I haven’t posted a new episode now in over two months. Well, the bad news is that the reason for the lack of podcast episodes is because of some unfortunate happenings regarding MacRadio. The good news is…

I’m baaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

I won’t go into detail, but suffice to say several months ago I began to realize that the developer/host site that took care of hosting and continued development needs for MacRadio wasn’t going to work out anymore. Sometimes these things just happen, and I think that I had been trying to delay this inevitable decision, hoping that something would change, or that I was wrong. I wasn’t, and two months ago I finally began looking for a new developer to replace them. A month ago, we began the migration of the site to the new host site (it involved more than just migration, as we had a lot of work to prepare the new host site for our needs), and last week we completed the migration.

But the downside was that all my energy was going towards getting this moving forward and maintaining my other revenue-streaming aspects of my company. And as iGame Radio at this time is a labor of love, revenue-streaming it is not. When time is limited, you have to make hard decisions. And that was the decision I had to make…to shelve iGame Radio and concentrate on the stuff that I needed to take care of because it brought in money. I knew that I could go back to iGame Radio again…it would just be a while.

Well, I am now on a two week break from the MacRadio side of things (still doing DigiPen PodClass work; nothing for Mac|Life at the moment) and can begin thinking about iGame Radio again. The past three days I spent at Casual Connect covering the conference for iGame Radio and DigiPen, and I have some great interviews for you, as well as some awesome info. I’ve also got some schedules for some later interviews in the next few weeks, like chatting with PlayFirst about their current and upcoming Mac offerings and an interview I’m trying to schedule with the folks at Sun for an update about Project Darkstar (lot’s going on there) wherein I might even get some info about where they are at with the Java Virtual Engine for the iPhone. They even offered the possibility of doing the interview within Project Wonderland which, if we end up doing so, would be awesome. If we do, I’ll record the whole video and post it up on the iGame Radio site for everyone to view!

I’m targeting the next episode of iGame Radio to post on July 31, but understand that this is an iffy thing. I have a *ton* of stuff for next week (as well as taking the entirety of Wednesday off for something personal) so that may not be possible. But the games that I would review I’ve already finished and partially completed the reviews of, and I have the interviews already…just need to edit them. So, ostensibly there’s not a whole lot to completing the episode. I’d just have to also do the (much more massively intensive) DigiPen editing and podcast completion, some legal work I need to have done by next Friday, somewhere in there I need to breathe…you get the idea. :)

Oh, another thing that I’ve done this evening is pare down my selection of games to review. I had quite the backlog. But after talking with Russel over at GameTunnel, I found that in the end, when one is backlogged that much, it’s best to just clear the cache and start over from scratch. So, what I decided to do was to review games that had been released no later than in the past three months. Games released earlier than that I searched through the Intarwebs for and looked for all of the reviews performed. For some, the Mac and PC version (if there was both) would be so similar that, if there was more than two reviews, I decided I would not review the game. If there were two reviews or less I have decided I’ll still review it. If there were two reviews or less for the Mac version and the Mac version could be considered to be substantially different enough from the PC version (either in content, such as FTLC, or performance, as one might expect for Enemy Territory or Neverwinter Nights 2) that a Mac review would be beneficial in comparison to the PC review, I have also decided I’ll still review it. Regardless, however, if it’s over six months old, it got dumped (sorry, those fans of EVE Online…but I will post a Tips and Tricks sometime).

Lastly, I’m going to be posting sometime soon (and mentioning on the show) and probably posting in other forums as well, a call to Survey Arms! Actually, it’s just a survey, but that sounded cooler. Anyway, I am interested in finding out what the majority of my listeners actually want me to focus on. I feel like my pot of potential games is too big, and I want to narrow that down a bit. Do you want me to focus on all games that can play on a Mac (which would include all original Mac content games, games ported over to the Mac, and flash/shockwave/other web-based games)? Do you want me to focus on a subset of these? Do you want me to only focus on traditional AAA titles/sports titles/strategy sims? Casual titles? Indie titles? Some combination thereof? Anyway, I’ll post about this when I have the formal survey ready (and there will be a prize drawing associated with it too!) but this is just to get you thinking.

Now, I’m done posting for the night. I go game now.
