SimCity Reboot Hits Mac

The SimCity reboot that EA announced at the GDC back in March has gotten a bunch of new additional goodies at Gamescom today. Among them is the awesome word that SimCity will be coming to Mac in 2013.

SimCity is under development by Maxis, the studio that started the franchise back in the late 80′s. The game has a long history of appearing on the Mac…in fact, every major release of the SimCity franchise has come to the Mac. Maxis expressed their happiness at bringing the game franchise back to the Mac again in both their blog and their twitter feed. No system requirements were released with the news, however.

Maxis is using their new GlassBox game engine and a new physics engine for this reboot, adding full 3D to the mix. Sims will have to deal with pollution, finite resources, and daily challenges such as losing a job.

A robust multiplayer mode is also part of the game. More of a feature of this multiplayer mode, SimCity World, was revealed today at Gamescom as well. With SimCity World you can keep connected with the entire world of SimCity and everyone playing in it, not just your friends list. Maxis mentioned aspects to this feature including Global Challenges that you could compete or collaborate with other players on, a Global Market that you would be able to buy and sell resources on, tracking your friends activities on a CityLog, and watching where you are on the leaderboard. Maxis released a trailer showing off some of SimCity World too.

SimCity has also launched its beta as of today…and the servers are already overloading. If you want to participate, you better hurry up and sign on for the beta right now.

Lastly, Maxis announced a feature called SimCity Insider, a section of SimCity.com where you can get a ton of exclusive content. Maxis is aiming for a release of new stuff every week that will be completely free for those who have signed up for the service. To sweeten the deal and encourage more to sign up, anyone who signs up now will get two Insider-only screenshots and a SimCity ringtone.

Maxis has partnered with Origin to put on a live chat with Producer Jason Haber on Wednesday, August 15th, at 2pm CET/5am PT for more details (there will be a replay available for those who aren’t interested in a 5am chat time). You can visit the chat page and sign up for a reminder.
