So Long and Thanks for all the Shamen

Good News! The popular MMORPG Everquest will be switching to a free-to-play model for PC users on March 29th. After then intrepid adventurers will be able to wade into the magic filled world of Norrath for free. Bad News! The popular MMORPG Everquest will be switching to a memory-based model for Mac users. By memory-based we mean based on your memories of the game as Everquest will no longer be available for the Mac after March 29th, 2012.

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley explained that the relatively small amount of Mac users playing the game combined with a lack of Mac programming resources at Sony are the main reasons for the impending shutdown. In an open message to EQ Mac fans in the Official Sony Everquest Forums Smedley thanked the Mac Everquest community for their long standing support, and expressed that Sony may be willing to make a Mac port of the current Everquest if Mac gamers express enough interest .

Everquest has enjoyed a loyal, if not overly large Mac fan base since it’s release in 2003 (The PC version has been out since 1999). In it’s 9 year existence it has received little in substantial updates and no expansion packs from Sony Interactive.
