Dota 2 champion crowned

UPDATE: looks like Dota 2 is going to be pushed to sometime early next year, according to this Shacknews article.

The International, the first tournament of Dota 2 held at Gamescom, has resulted in a champion. Valve has announced that team “Na’Vi” from Ukraine took first place with the $1 million grand prize.

Over five days, this event was viewed by millions through live broadcasts and live audiences. The International featured the 16 best Dota teams in the world competing in the Dota 2 Championships through a group stage, double elimination playoff format over the course of Cologne’s five-day trade show. Teams represented countries from across the world, including Denmark, China, Russia, the Philippines, and Singapore.

In addition to the cash prizes awarded by Valve, Nvidia provided all the hardware for the event plus hardware prizes for the winning team. Valve has confirmed that it will be holding another International tournament next year, and is even discussing upcoming Dota 2 events during its beta phase.

Dota 2 is the stand-alone sequel that Valve is developing to the popular Warcraft III mod map Defense of the Ancients (popularly known as Dota). The game will tentatively be released for Windows and Mac later this year early next year.

Two week vacation means silence can be golden

Head Editor Omaha Sternberg has left for a vacation in the balmy state of Florida. We’ll be back on 8/22 with more of the Mac and iOS gaming world when she’s back. In the meantime, she’ll do her best to relax and not work because that’s what you do during a vacation. Except for that one review that she’s finishing writing on her Macbook Pro. And the iPad games that she’ll be playing in the evening. And catching up on twitter responses. And….

[Podcast] Game Review Cast 42: Piclings, iShot, Mosquito’s Insomnia

What’s inside this episode:

  • A review of Piclings, by Pan Vision. Let’s you create game levels from your own pictures and share it with others, but doesn’t do any of the explaining about how. Gameplay tools are simple, but not always responsive, so your fun value may vary.
    Piclings
  • Also, a review of iShot, published by IZ Ventures. A cute little fake drinking game for about 15 minutes of your time. It will probably be a lot more fun if you are drinking as much as your iPhone is.
    iShot
  • Plus, a review of Mosquito’s Insonmia, published by MeanMob. An eerie, bizarre, excellently drawn game arcade game with great music and simple, basic gameplay but a bit of a difficult playing curve.

iOS Game Watch: Soup Du Jour, Mr. BBQ, The Marbians

Soup Du Jour for the iPad is the latest from Digital Eel. This matching game includes rubbery physics, stretchy sound effects, and promised rule-breaking gameplay. Colorful shapes fall into your pot, and you tug and toss them together to burst the matches. Beware the pesky Kitchen Gremlin that adds in explodee things, though. You can grab the game from the App store for $1.99.

Golden Arrow Studio has released Mr. BBQ, a platform collection game in which a vigilante pig negotiates the urban sprawl to collect bbqs and save all porcine kind from the firey demise. You have to defeat traps to move from one level to the next, but get powerups to help you along the way. The graphics are simple, hand-drawn visuals where even the enemies are cute. The game is downloadable for $1.99.

The Marbians, a game for iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad, was released last week. A physics-based marble themed puzzler from Nordisk Film, players can send marble-like Marbians careening off walls and around obstacles to collect moon rocks, racking up points to eventually reach their UFO homes. Though the game is initially free to download, this will only get you the first 6 levels. Continued play includes a cost…$0.99 for the iPhone version, $1.99 for the iPad version. This has already rubbed some people the wrong way, as the biggest complaint from low star reviews so far is this issue.
