    As always, loved the podcast! Just a quick note that Steam DOES indeed have an offline mode that will allow most steam games to be played off-line.

    I will probably not be getting Diablo 3 due to the online requirement. It is just too much silliness: I will get Torchlight 2 instead. As a vintage gamer I am watching the future of my niche be destroyed by excessive copy protection schemes employed by today’s games. How are you going to play a 2010 classic 20 years from now when the licensing server has been down for 10 years? I guess only pirated versions will exist.

    As a game buyer I am now being penalized for shelling out the bucks on a game when a pirated version is superior in almost every way. For example I bought Spore in it’s release date. The first update caused my copy and thousands of other Mac user’s copies to fail due to a DRM failure. Meanwhile those that DID NOT BUY the game and downloaded the torrent (on day 1 BTW) were trouble free the whole time I was running repeated installs, patching and waiting over a month for a fix! A half year later I could finally do what pirates could on release day: play the game without the CD in the drive. At some point this silliness has to end.

    I have to wonder if the total cost of DRM including support, customization costs, and lost customers costs more to the software companies then losses due to piracy.

    Note that I spend well over $1000 a year on gaming across multiple platforms so I am no piracy advocate. I just find it frustrating throughout the 80’s and 90’s when you plunked down hard earned cash you were rewarded with a nice manual, or a map, and a good stable version of a game.Now you just get a lousy license and a privacy agreement that signs your life away.
