9 Innings 2011 brings back the love of baseball cards

Update: Com2uS responded to some questions regarding the different modes and the Apple devices available to run the game, and I’ve updated the article to reflect that.

Com2uS has released their next iPhone game in their baseball series today. 9 Innings 2011 is the next step up in baseball gaming on the iPhone, including more realistic gameplay, player photos and statistics, and the Card Shop…baseball card-based gaming.

Developed in conjunction with the MLB, 9 Innings 2011 features all of the 2010 American League All-Stars, National League All-Stars, coaches, managers, and almost 800 Major Leaguers from all 30 Major League teams. Each player appears in the game as a baseball card with their actual photo profiles and their latest statistics.

And you can manage your cards in the Card Shop. This new feature provides an interesting take on customization within the game. You can obtain better players by either drawing new cards to play with or combining old cards for a new player. Baseball cards come in Normal, Rare, Special, Hero, and Platinum grades, and you can level them up with points you win in any of the game modes.

Gameplay has been made more realistic as well, allowing you more control over your player than previous Com2uS baseball games. You can control every pitch in the game, but the throw is affected by player statistics and even mental status, providing better strategy for the game.

In League Mode, you pick a team to play a full 162-game season, making it through the postseason playoffs to the World Series. You can also pick from Exhibition and Homerun mode as well. Homerun mode is similar to a homerun derby game, where the goal is to hit as many homeruns as you can in a time limit. Exhibition mode allows you to pick any team and play against another team of your choosing.

9 Innings 2011 is available for iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, and iPod Touch models for $4.99. Interestingly, the game does not seem to be available for the original iPhone. (Update: the developer confirmed that any Apple mobile device that runs OS 3.0 and above will run the game).
