Toy Story 3 hitting all major Apple game tech

ETA: After browsing through the iPhone app, I’ll add that the user interface is a bit confusing as well. It’s hard to figure out what is part of the app and what is part of the Disney website, and when you access premium content, it doesn’t tell you how much it costs.

Toy Story 3Disney is releasing Toy Story 3, the next in the giant Toy Story series, on June 18th. With as big a media conglomerate as Disney is, it doesn’t come as a surprise that they are accessing every media market to stoke the marketing fires. Thus, they are releasing two Toy Story 3 games for Apple electronic devices…Toy Story 3 for the iPhone and Toy Story 3: The Video Game.

Toy Story 3 for the iPhone and iPod Touch is a free app that’s billed as letting “…fans play, personalize and stay connected to their favorite “Toy Story” characters, stories and happenings through both free and premium content”. Premium content is purchased from within the app, and ranges in price from $.99 to $3.99.

Premium content available at launch includes a game called Woody’s Wild Ride! for $3.99, where you play as Woody as he and his horse Bullseye collect items with Woody’s lasso, dodge obstacles, and unlock achievements in the Wild West. You can also find items camouflaged in Woody’s and Bonnie’s rooms and the Sunnyside Daycare in a hidden object style game called Operation Camouflage that can be purchased from within the app for $2.99.

Some of the premium content available can actually be found for free just on the Internet. For example, Sound Around costs $.99 to listen to Buzz and Woody’s classic phrases as well as toy sound effects from Andy’s rooms. The only free item within the game is a messaging tool, called Woody’s Greeting, which allows you to send a customized message to friends hear a customized message from Woody to yourself. Uh…right.

Despite the limited content in the app itself, the size is over 100 MB. Yet Disney also plans to update the app with new features throughout the year. Hopefully, there will be some streamlining involved so that the app doesn’t pork out.

The app also features Toy Story themed virtual Pins that you can collect as a reward for exploring, playing, and purchasing new apps, as well as crossing over with Toy Story 3: The Video Game for the Mac which has also been released.

Transgaming has announced they are bringing Toy Story 3: The Video Game to the Mac using Cider Technology. You can play as Buzzy, Woody, or Jessie within the game playing two different modes.

In Story Mode, play as Buzz, Woody, or Jessie as they seek to escape the dangers of Sunnyside daycare. Toy Box Mode is more flexible, allowing you to choose different types of activities and use your own creativity. There are missions to run, which when completed will earn you rewards and new customizations. You can use the gold you earn also to buy new toys. The customization can be applied to buildings, landscaping, even the townspeople.

System requirements include:

  • Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard
  • Intel Core Duo Processor (This game will not run on PowerPC)
  • 1GB RAM
  • 6GB uncompressed hard drive space
  • ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT or Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 (Intel GMA 950 not supported)
