Fixing a broken store; Searching for iPad Games on iTunes

May 4, 2010 · Posted in General

The moment I got hold of my Wi-Fi iPad, I couldn’t wait to get home, sync up, and start searching for games for the iPad. Sure, I had developers who had already eagerly sent me codes for games, but I wanted more, dammit! MORE! So it was with great joy and excitement that I unboxed my iPad, connected the firewire cord, and watched the iTunes icon start hopping in the dock.

iTunes resolved. I clicked on the iTunes Store icon. My palms sweated in anticipation. The App Store appeared. And all I saw was links for iPhone games. “Featured” “Top Paid” Top Free” There was one place to go to find iPad apps. “New and Noteworthy”. Ummmmmmmmm…..

I realized that to find iPad games I would have to search. I typed in “iPad” in the search function. It presented me with a few selections that had the word “iPad” in them. There was no category, no large section. Not on the iTunes store on my Mac, not on the iTunes store on my iPad.

But, no more! Things have changed. Not a few days after the release of the 3G iPad, and the store now shows a whole separate tab for iPad apps as well as iPhone apps. “Featured”, “New and Noteworthy”, “What’s Hot”, and top paid and free apps. There’s even a special link to iPad games in the upper right hand corner.

I wish that they hadn’t taken so long to get something like this ready to go, a month after the Wi-Fi iPad was released. I can understand that at launch there were nowhere near as many iPad apps available, so having a separate link like this might have seemed to show a rather empty store in comparison. But that doesn’t change the fact that an easier way to search for apps could have been devised.
