Steam on Mac on May
Macworld.com reports that Valve has updated their release information for the Mac version of Steam to May 12th. In addition to their digital distribution service, they will also be bringing over Source, their game engine, to Mac OSX as well as a selection of their current titles, such as Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2, and the title in development, Portal 2. The article doesn’t specify whether Source or the prior announced titles would be available on May 12th, however.
Steam will be natively ported to the OSX platform, as opposed to an emulation. “We looked at a variety of methods to get our games onto the Mac and in the end decided to go with native versions rather than emulation,” said John Cook, Director of Steam Development.
The article also mentions the high quality of a beta of a Mac version of Portal as another good reason for the native port being chosen.
