Project Darkstar is dead! Long live Project Darkstar!

Project DarkstarEver since Oracle grabbed Sun Microsystems, I’ve been concerned regarding what would happen to Project Darkstar. Well, my concern has been realized…Project Darkstar has been shown the door.

Briefly, Project Darkstar is open-source server software written in Sun’s Java that is used to create massive and persistent virtual worlds that are easily scalable. A number of smaller companies have already adopted the idea, and it has a healthy developer community.

Where it is going from here is unknown. The forum posts suggest that developers want the software to continue growing, and made mention that a circumstance such as this was figured into the idea for the project from the beginning. But whether Project Darkstar will continue to flourish will really depend on how much the developer community wants it to. You can get more information about Project Darkstar from an interview I did with Chris Melissinos, the project’s chief gaming officer and evangelist, during PAX in 2008.
